Berlin, the capital of Germany, is a fascinating city. Its history goes back to the 12th-13th Century, but it was mostly during the 20th Century that the city got to the forefront of World Stage. Almost all major events of the 20th Century can be traced back to Berlin. In the same spirit, one can say that Berlin is the capital of the 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, during the years of the Weimar Republic, Berlin was the center of art and culture with the famous cabarets in the Kurfürstendamm. At that time Berlin also became the erotic center of Europe. It was a liberal city, a home for poets, writers and journalists. Until WWII, one-quarter of all Nobel Prize winners all over the world came from Germany. The Humboldt University in Berlin takes pride in the fact that until the Nazis came to power, it had 29 professors who won the Nobel Prize. The city witnessed Hitler’s rise to Power in 1933 and it was here that the Nazi’s masterminded their genocidal plans against European Jewry, against the Gypsies, as well as the oppression and murder of political opponents, homosexuals, physically and mentally infirm, and the so-called “a-socials”. It was the capital of the Nazi Regime during the Third Reich and it was the center of the Cold War. The Berlin-Wall of August 13th, 1961 became a symbol for the battle between the free world and the communist world. It was here that J.F.K. held his famous speech, the “Ich bin ein Berliner”. Since the fall of the Berlin-Wall in 1989 and the reunification of Germany in 1990, Berlin became a symbol for a new hope and for a new beginning. In recent years, Berlin became an attraction-point for young people from all over the world. Berlin today is an exhilarating combination of avant-garde culture, complex identity issues and preservation of historical landmarks. The city celebrates its multi-cultural character with people from over 180 different countries. The story of Berlin is the story of the 20th Century, and we would like to share it with you.
